Steel Ball Run: JoJo Part 7 in English, how many volumes and where to start

· Tsundoku Club

Steel Ball Run is Part 7 of Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. In 1890, a horse race across the United States offers a $50 million prize. Johnny Joestar, a former jockey who can no longer walk, enters it alongside Gyro Zeppeli, an executioner from the Kingdom of Naples, and the two find the race's sponsor has plans of his own. VIZ only began publishing it in English in 2025, so a lot of people are asking how many volumes there are and when the next one is out. Here's the answer, and why it's a good place to start JoJo.

The short answer

Steel Ball Run is finished in Japan: 95 chapters in 24 volumes, published from 2004 to 2011. VIZ's English hardcovers have reached Vol. 9. Vol. 10 is due on 31 December 2026 and Vol. 11 on 27 February 2027. Start with Vol. 1.

How many volumes are there?

  • In Japan: 24 volumes. The first 23 chapters ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2004, and the rest in the monthly Ultra Jump until 2011.
  • In English: Vols. 1–9 are out from VIZ Media, as chunky hardcovers.
  • Next in English: Vol. 10 is due on 31 December 2026 and Vol. 11 on 27 February 2027, and both are open for pre-order.

English release dates

These are UK dates, which are often a few weeks after the US ones.

  • Vols. 1–9: out now
  • Vol. 10: due on 31 December 2026
  • Vol. 11: due on 27 February 2027
  • Vol. 12: due on 22 April 2027

VIZ's books hold more chapters than the Japanese volumes did (Vol. 1 is chapters 1–11, Vol. 9 is chapters 64–72), so there will be fewer than 24 of them. With Vol. 9 ending at chapter 72 of 95, the end is in sight.

Can I start JoJo with Steel Ball Run?

Yes. Steel Ball Run starts a new continuity, separate from Parts 1–6, with a new cast that includes a new Joestar, Johnny. You don't need to have read anything before it, and Japan's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guide recommended it as a starting point for exactly that reason. It also carries on into the parts after it, JoJolion and The JoJoLands, which are set in the same new world.

If you'd rather start at the very beginning, Part 1, Phantom Blood Vol. 1, is where JoJo begins.

The anime

David Production's anime, Steel Ball Run: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, is on Netflix. Its first stage started in March 2026 and its second in September 2026. The manga is the way to read ahead.
